Expecting reverence and adoration while broadcasting to the Net from the comfort of your Mother’s basement however, will probably not pack the same punch. You need to personal in your approach. Nobody owes you anything so when people appreciate your music, keep your tone thankful and pleasant rather than treating them like they have just finally come to their senses by realizing that you are actually a God after all.

If you’re main interest in music is the giant ego trip and wanting to be treated like a celebrity then I have an alternative piece of advice for you……………

Just forget it and find something else to do with your time.

Is Your Site Making Some Of These Mistakes?

1.No Email List!

You have to try to build relationships with your visitors and on of the absolute best ways to do this is to have an email list where you can keep people up to date with your news. You should also have an easy sign-up form on your pages to make it very easy for people to sign up.

2.FLASH FLASH FLASH!

I agree that graphics in flash format can look great but you need to understand one very important thing. Search engine spiders don’t read flash! In particular if you have all your navigation in flash you are more than likely to be missing out on a lot of traffic. If you must use flash use it like a jpg or gif maybe a header and some other graphics but keep your important info and navigation out of flash.

3.Optimizing For Your Own Name

Many musicians check their own name (or band name) in Google and if it comes up well in the listings then everything must be ok? Well, not really. You are trying to grow your fanbase so what about all the people who would like your music but don’t already know your name?

Type the style of music you play or where you are from into Google and see how you do. Your name is important but you need to optimize for other search terms as well.

4.No Blog!

If you are not blogging you are missing out on a lot of new visitors. The best way is to use something like wordpress on your own site rather than blogger. Wordpress is easy to use and it’s free! There is a long list of reasons why you should blog, I won’t go into those here but suffice to say.

5.Not Using Social Bookmarking!

Web 2.0 is here. The basic idea here is user rated material rather than computer rated! Write a good post on your blog, socially bookmark it and that will really bring in the traffic. To get you started check out del.icio  and Digg to get you started

I know I haven’t gone into detail about the individual techniques here but trust me these things are worth learning about.

As I said in my last post, the email newsletter is still a staple and will continue to be but it never hurts to have other fresh ideas to help keep your music in front of the public.

The custom start page is also a winner and it’s free.

For your loyal newsletter readers and start page users you could try giving something that is only for them to make them feel that little bit special.

A great example of this I recently came across was an audio Behind The Scenes. Basically it was the band describing the meaning of one of their songs and how it was recorded.

I’m not saying you should copy that idea exactly but you should make every effort to make your regular visitors feel special.

Not alone will they buy your current CD but they will probably be the first to buy your next one as well so look after them!

There is no reason to suggest things are any different when it comes to selling Cds. The simple truth is that you must build relationships with your fans. The time tested email newsletter is one way to do this relationship building is the main reason it has been so successful for the last few years.

A new way to build relationships is to have a custom start page that people can set in their browser as the page that comes up when they open their browser.

The idea itself is not new but here is a new twist that makes it work. Most people want to search when they go on the Net so it could be difficult to convince them to set your site as a start page.

The solution?

Get a custom page with Google search as the central element and links to your site and music.

That way you are giving people the thing they are more than likely to need anyway so they have a good reason to set it as their start page.

Also, because you are giving them what they need, they are very likely to keep the page as their start page.

Regular updates and email newsletters are a good start but you need to do more.

With that in mind here is a good idea. Most people will have a search engine set as their Start page when they go on the Net. Google is the widely used.

Why not get a custom Start page with Google Search and branded with your music and a link to your web site? It’s a great way to keep in contact with your fans.

But won’t that cost you money?

There are sites that will give away stuff for FREE if you are prepared to sign up and look at some offers or fill out a few short surveys. You would be amazed at some of the stuff you can get for nothing but a few minutes of filling out surveys.

You the have two options, you could always just keep the stuff yourself or you could give it away at your gigs or on your website. Nothing gets people’s attention like the offer of free stuff.

But couldn’t I just give away a few free CDs?

The value of your CD in the mind of your fans is largely a perceived one. If you offer CDs as free giveaways you will affect that perceived value in the mind of the potential buyer. In my experience it is much better to give away something else as a freebie and charge for the CDs.

Ok, so you have your free stuff to give away, what do you want in return? Email addresses! Whether it be at gigs or on your website you have a draw for the freebie and people must give you their email address to enter. The payoff for you? You build your email list!

Your list is the single most important tool you should be using to keep in contact with fans and potential sales. Some would go as far as to say that if you don’t have a list you may as well not be on the Net in the first place. I wouldn’t go quite that far but you certainly are limiting yourself severely if you don’t maintain an email list.

1.Webmasters use these sites to find content for their own sites so if you write an interesting article it could finish up being published all over the place.

2.You get to attach a signature (as described earlier) so people can get to your site and book.

3.If your article is good then you immediately have a bit of credibility and as described earlier, anything you can do to build your credibility is a HUGE help!

As you can see a well written article can be a great help in attracting large numbers of visitors. There is some work and the subject matter must be good.

What should you write about? Well, anything really but as usual the watch-word is ‘useful’. Maybe you have a professional recording background? You could write short tutorials. Maybe you have gigged a lot? You could write about the pitfalls of being on the road and how to avoid them.

The possibilities are endless. Make it informative and useful and people will read and distribute it. The link in your signature will travel with it wherever it goes and this will bring a LOT of visitors.
